Biography writing week 8 - by Taeshell Makita

Student's in class 3 have been writing biographies about 'special people' on a local or global scale. Here is Taeshell's biography about her selected special person.

Sir Edmund Percival Hillary

Sir Edmund Hillary was born on July 20, 1919 and died on January 11, 2008. He grew up in New Zealand, Auckland and lived on Grand drive located in Eastern Auckland. If you noticed Sir Edmund Hillary is actually on New Zealand’s 5 dollar note, he is very famous because he was the first person to climb Mt Everest. Where he went for Primary was Tuakau Primary. For college he attended Auckland Grammar School and then studied maths and science at University of Auckland.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay was the first people to climb to the summit of Mt Everest. They both achieved this huge goal in 1953. Both of them went through a lot during their trip up Mt Everest. Such as blistering winds, dangerous heights and freezing days. But he was determined to make it to the top along with his buddie Tenzing Norgay. Eventually they both made it and were very proud of what they have achieved. If you were to look on a New Zealand five-dollar note, you would see that Sir Edmund Hillary is the figure on it. I think that he is on the five dollar bill because of his historical achievement for being the first New Zealand person to climb Mt Everest.

Sir Edmund Hillary became a famous person after he climbed the tallest mountain in the world (Mt Everest). But before he had accomplished that he had already been successful with climbing other mountains. In 1939 Mt Olivier was the first mountain Sir Edmund Hillary climbed. He then decided to join the Air Force and trained to be a navigator in 1943, he promised himself after the war that he would be a mountaineer. In the year 1945, Sir Edmund Hillary was a flying  boat navigator in the Pacific during the war. He got badly burnt and got sent back home. He spent the next few years climbing in the Southern Alps, including Mt Cook. 1949, Sir Edmund Hillary travelled to Europe and climbed in the Austrian and Swiss Alps.

Sir Edmund Hillary married Louise Rose. But sadly in 1975, Lady Hillary and their youngest child Belinda were killed in a plane crash in Nepal. He was really devastated and he went through depression. Ten years after the accident he recovered and married June Mulgrew, widow of his friend Peter Mulgrew who died in 979 during the Erebus plane crash.

Even though Sir Edmund Hillary has passed on, he is still a legend. I think he probably inspired people to keep on going, even when they feel like giving up. He was a great person and has achieved many different things. Especially climbing mountains, he was really good at that.

The Malaysian Airlines Gone Missing!

A Malaysian Airlines flight MH 370 has vanished off the radar screens last week on an early Saturday less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur . The Malaysian Airlines flight was bound towards Beijing. With 239 people on board the flight, they still haven’t manage to find the plane .

At this stage the reason of disappearance is unknown.  The weather was fine, but the plane was at cruising altitude and flew above 35,000 feet and the pilots didn’t send a distress signal. The Malaysian aviation also investigated two New Zealand passengers apparently able to get on the aircraft with stolen passports.

It is almost 2 weeks now since the plane still missing. Many people have said, that the two passengers with stolen passports might of turned off the radar signal. The plane maybe was hijacked and the plane did a u turn in the wrong direction before the signal went off, but we don’t have much evidence..

Frustration is growing among relatives of those on the plane at lack of progress in search. Relatives anger over the vanished plane information on the fate of their love ones on board the Malaysian Airliner. Malaysian children stand in front of a board with messages to people involved in the missing Malaysia Airlines Jet liner.

Conclusion: Search efforts for the Malaysia Airlines jet has been redoubled after a search plane noticed a pallet and other floating objects in a remote area of the southern Indian Ocean.

Raeleen's explanation about 'empathy'

This week, students in class 3 have been writing explanations about 'empathy'

What does empathy mean to me? Empathy is having the ability to understand the feeling of another person's emotions or situations. Empathy is respecting others. Sympathy is pity, empathy is a way of understanding others even when they are new to our school. What if you got picked on how would you feel. Would you feel upset or angry?. Having empathy is sticking up for something like that. we help people that need it, not people who take advantage of your kindness. Empathy is caring and loving for others.

People show empathy by lending a helping hand by showing them you care for them and being kind to a classmate or a  friend. Sometimes we show empathy by talking them through their situation and helping them feel included to our school or game. We help them when they are needed so they don’t feel left out.

It is important to show empathy to others because they might not know what empathy means so that they can tell their friends to show empathy to others. Empathy is a out word for being kind to one another and respecting others. The key thing about why is empathy important is that heaps of us kids can change our behaviour by doing chores and not complaining.

On the playground heaps of kids play but they don’t care for the juniors so someone always goes to class crying.  By showing empathy at the playground,  we can keep the little juniors safe by keeping an eye out for the little ones encase they get hurt.  When it comes to sharing time in the class and someone says the wrong word don’t laugh just be sensible when they are sharing their work to others and pay attention because they might have some interesting facts that you might want. Support them by not backstabbing them when they say or do the wrong thing.

Remember to always have a open mind and a open heart when it comes to empathy, empathy is a way of treating others like they are your siblings. Sometimes heaps of juniors gets bullied by older seniors, If the the bullies don’t know what is empathy just tell them. If your Best friend gets bullied on don’t just stand their just use your self defence or walk away and ignore it.
